Pima Medical Institute’s Denver Campus Repeats as Back-to-Back Winner of National Respiratory Care Competition
This is the Sixth National Sputum Bowl Title for the Denver Campus
Denver, Colo. (November 12, 2019) – Pima Medical Institute’s Denver Campus has won the National Sputum Bowl Challenge for a second year in a row! Part of the American Association for Respiratory Care’s (AARC) annual conference, held this year in New Orleans, the competition is a Jeopardy-style quiz game where students must quickly and accurately answer questions that range from anatomy and physiology to mechanical breathing and disease.

This is the eighth national title in 14 years for Pima Medical with wins in 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2008, 2006 and 2005. This year, two teams from Denver as well as teams from the Mesa, Arizona and Las Vegas campuses advanced through state competitions to display their knowledge at the competition. One Denver team made it to the quarterfinals, the Mesa campus recorded a top ten finish and the Las Vegas campus earned the Fred Helmholtz Sportsmanship Award. The Las Vegas team traveled more than 24 hours due to flight issues and arrived to compete just one hour before their first match.

The winning Denver team beat out Crafton Hills, California to take the title.
The title is more than just winning a competition. It highlights the outstanding job of Pima Medical faculty and staff to prepare these students to be professionals that are at the top of their game.

The National Title team included Jamie Sornberger, Olivia Miller, Christopher Bunce and Maritza Gonzalez. In addition to the rigorous classroom work associated with their degree program, the students spent extra time practicing and studying for the competition.
The AARC yearly conference features the latest in respiratory therapy technology, breakthroughs in treatment and education. Practitioners, students and instructors from across the country attend.
Pima Medical offers the associate degree in respiratory therapy program at its Albuquerque, N.M, Chula Vista, Calif., Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Renton, Wash., Mesa, Ariz., and Tucson, Ariz. campuses. It also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in respiratory therapy online.
