Public Response to Recent VA Action – Ashford University

Late yesterday, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Deputy Under Secretary Curtis Coy emailed our veteran students at Ashford University for the eighth time with a dire warning about the potential termination of their benefits under the GI Bill. Many of the first seven emails were incorrect or misleading, and almost all of them eventually needed to be corrected. But not before they caused undue stress and inconvenience to more than 5,000 veterans.

The eighth and latest letter, sent on the eve of Veterans Day, includes yet another inaccurate warning that will bring a new round of unnecessary confusion and concern. And while I’m confident this email will meet the same fate as so many of the previous seven, I’m angered that our students, our staff, and their families are still dealing with this irresponsible fear-mongering. I’ve been humbled by their resilience, and our team remains committed to taking every step necessary so that we can keep serving our students. But our hope is that VA will finally realize, at some point, that enough must surely be enough.

Throughout this frustrating process, VA has repeatedly moved the goal posts. But this latest email might be the biggest leap of all, however, as it explicitly relies on a radical departure from VA’s previous understanding of the regulations surrounding GI Bill approval and its role in that process. This new approach hasn’t been promulgated as an official regulation and hasn’t gone through public review. It seems to come instead from a handful of officials held over from the previous administration.
